“Fantasy is an exercise bicycle for the mind. It might not take you anywhere, but it tones up the muscles that can. Of course, I could be wrong.” - Terry Pratchett
Fantasy is an unrealistic image, which the mind implements to displace reality. The results of this displacement of reality may eventuate in some positive rewards. However, fantasy can be a double-edged sword and can have a resultant negative impact at times. Contemplating the pros and cons of fantasy on the psyche, especially in our virtual world of today, may be a realistic pursuit of interest.
“Without this playing with fantasy no creative work has ever yet come to birth. The debt we owe to the play of the imagination is incalculable.” - Carl Jung
Imagination and creativity seemingly have their roots in fantasy. Innovation and progress begin with the fantasy of new ideas. Edison, Einstein, Disney and da Vinci are exemplars of the incredible imaginative power that can alter our reality via fantasy.
The creative energy that fantasy can supply is unlimited. Obviously, splitting the atom has a positive side but we also now have the threat of nuclear weapons.
Another reward of fantasy is escapism. This respite allows for greater emotional control, which provides a stress release minimising pressure and possible burnout.
The virtual reality of games and other technological pursuits is available in the palm of your hand. This positive pursuit may also have the down-side of distraction addiction, which is an increasingly modern-day affliction.
Fantasy sports have become a pastime for many arm-chair athletes. This fantasy allows those who are not athletic to still feel like they are competing on the playing field. This activity can provide an escape and diversion from the reality of work or other mundane domestic tasks.

Reading works of fiction or watching a streamed series of videos may also provide relief and stimulation through fantasy. You can attempt to figure out the murder mystery or final outcome of the drama through the detachment of reading or viewing material without risking the bite of reality. Fiction or fantasy also allows the participant to experiment with new perspectives of reality, which may stimulate their own growth and imagination.
“To fulfil a fantasy is the quickest way to destroy it.” - Duane Michals
Fantasy does have a down-side. Many a fantasy starts out in a good place only to end in tragedy.
The affair outside a marriage can end in divorce, which may mean loss of time with children and loss of property. Sometimes a fantasy business looks so good on paper but when one fails to write a proper business plan or complete the necessary market research that business may end in bankruptcy. These pursuits both started with fantasy but did not end up there.
Fantasy can be an illusion. The ideas and thoughts sound reasonable and logical but end up being only an image of unsupported information. Many an innovative project has ended due to this illusion.
The world may be in the throngs of such an illusion at present. The AI promise of utopia is looking more and more like dystopia. That is, the promise of a world with no disease, no wars, and no worries, may really be at the risk of an intelligence that decides to take over the world and eliminate the only threat, humans. This fantasy is still in progress and what may be even scarier is the potential reality.
Fantasy addiction involves an individual’s compulsive engagement in fantasy-related activities despite adverse consequences. Fantasy addiction is the compulsive engagement in imaginative scenarios that serve as an escape from reality. Individuals with this behavioural pattern immerse themselves in elaborate fantasies, leading to difficulties distinguishing between their imagined experiences and actual events (1).

The Erotic-Themed Fantasy Addiction is especially problematic in today’s world. This addiction can lead to paedophilia, which puts young vulnerable children at risk and carries a long-term prison term to offenders. In addition, there is the issue of pornography addiction, which creates desensitisation of the libido and assorted sexual dysfunctions like impotence and emotional numbness.
Fantasy Media Overconsumption is also the primary reason distraction-addiction becomes problematic. Distraction‑Addiction involves a compulsion to move away, repeatedly, and uncontrollably, from your initial purpose. The behaviour may be motivated by either an internal or an external source.
While the concepts of distraction and addiction have been defined and studied separately in the past, the notion of these two variables as one influencing factor is relatively new and warrants further exploration. An internal driver of distraction-addiction is triggered when there is any diminished ability to pay attention and hold one’s focus on the task. The individual simply lacks the ability to attend. Another internal driver occurs when an individual merely lacks interest in the subject of the moment. On the external side, individuals seeking interest will be distracted toward some externality more readily when they are feeling unstimulated or bored.
“I like fantasy, but I don't live and breathe fantasy.” - Lauren Schmidt Hissrich
Several implications appear salient regarding fantasy. Fantasy has the potential to be uplifting and creative to the psyche, or alternatively, an impediment to psychological health.
The key to productive fantasy would be that it is utilised as a supplemental attribute rather than a primary attribute. The unhealthy manifestation of fantasy is more likely in over and inappropriate use of this concept. Overuse may end in addiction and inappropriate use may promote maladjustment in one’s behaviour.
While healthy fantasy, like stress release and creativity, supports mental health, unhealthy fantasy, like addiction and maladjustment, might be the catalyst for diminished mental health.
Could the increase in in mental health issues worldwide be related to these two yet unidentified addictions? Distraction-addiction and fantasy addiction are everywhere. Mobile phones have become an appendage. Reading and active sport have taken a backseat to Xbox, especially amongst the young. And perhaps most significantly, these two addictions are working on the totality of the world’s population in tandem.
In fact, it would be hard to distinguish between the two addictions at times. Escape from reality has never been more popular. Is your distraction also your fantasy and vice-versa?
